Each year Deakin Rural Health staff are involved with the Western District Health Service (WDHS) and Winda-Mara Aboriginal Corporation’s Careers Day held at WDHS in Hamilton.
Indigenous students from across the region are invited to attend and are informed about various career opportunities for working in hospitals. A tour of WDHS includes being shown around the kitchen/catering facilities, maintenance area, nursing wards and being provided with information about various allied health roles.
At the informal lunch gathering guest presenters are invited to inform the students about the different pathways available and the opportunities that are about as well as discussing first hand experiences and stories to ensure a career in health is well supported.
This video contains the highlights from a video project created by the 2016 Student Representative Committee at the Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA). The project addresses some of the challenges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students encounter during their university studies with senior AIDA members and leaders answering questions based on their own experiences, offering insight, wisdom and useful advice for AIDA student members, as well as broader mainstream audiences.
