Deakin students may be eligible for Financial Assistance when undertaking a rural placement and are encouraged to explore the below support options.
Students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the various opportunities for financial support that are available to all Deakin students. The Division of Student life is the point-of-contact for students who might seek financial grants, emergency food and travel vouchers, and budget advice. For any students who might experience financial difficulties, interest-free student loans for study-related expenses might be available. The links related to these Deakin-wide options are available below:
The Schools within the Faculty of Health also provide complementary support for students who undertake rural clinical placements. This takes several forms and the support isn't necessarily limited to financial payments to students. Students should talk with their Placement Coordinator and other staff within their host school to determine what options are available as support for rural clinical placements.
The Rural Clinical Support Grant to ease the financial pressures associated with students’ rural clinical placements. This will allow a greater number of Deakin’s health students take up hands-on, relevant clinical experience in rural locations. The Grant is funded by the Commonwealth’s Department of Health through their Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training program.
The initiative aims to widen participation in rural clinical placements for eligible Deakin health students. Applications are now open for 2018 and to be eligible for the grant, a student must:
· Be a domestic Deakin student, enrolled in a health degree (excluding Medicine) during 2018; and
· Undertake a formal, approved, clinical placement in a rural area as part of their course.
The grant will help students to meet costs associated with their rural clinical placement and may help towards:
· Placement travel costs (to take up, and return from, the placement);
· Accommodation that may be required during the period of the clinical placement; and
· Incidental costs that arise during the placement.
Rural Clinical Support Grant applications are assessed and awarded when they are received. Further information is available via the DSA Scholarships page. Alternatively, students may apply here for 2018 Rural Clinical Support Grants.
Financial assistance towards removal expenses for students on year-long rural clinical placements may be available. For further information please contact the relevant Rural Clinical School.
